Role overview
We’re looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to build and maintain the services behind the product. Our backend mainly uses JavaScript/TypeScript and Node.js, with an event-driven microservices architecture running on Kubernetes.
You’ll work on new features, external integrations, reliability and production issues. You’ll also contribute to technical decisions and review changes before release.
We have development guidelines and staged deployment procedures that you’ll need to learn and follow. You should be able to understand an existing system, ask useful questions and consider how a change could affect other services and customers.
This is a full-time, fully remote role. Familiarity with Rust would be appreciated, but it isn’t required.
What you will be doing
- Build and maintain backend services and APIs using Node.js and TypeScript.
- Develop event producers, consumers and background workers, handling retries, duplicate events, ordering and partial failures.
- Integrate external providers and manage webhooks, authentication, rate limits and provider failures.
- Design database schemas, optimise queries and prepare safe migrations.
- Review changes for correctness, security, performance and compatibility with other services.
- Write tests for important workflows and failure cases.
- Follow development guidelines and release changes through review, testing and staged deployments.
- Plan validation and rollback or recovery steps before deploying significant changes.
- Investigate production issues using logs, metrics and traces, and address their underlying causes.
- Document technical decisions and communicate progress, dependencies and risks clearly.
Requirements & qualifications
- Strong experience building and maintaining JavaScript/TypeScript and Node.js services in production.
- Practical experience with event-driven architecture, microservices and message brokers or queues.
- Understanding of idempotency, delivery guarantees, retries, dead-letter queues and eventual consistency.
- Strong database fundamentals, including transactions, indexing, query optimisation and migrations.
- Experience with API design, authentication, permissions and backend security.
- Practical experience with Docker, Kubernetes and CI/CD, including staged deployments and production troubleshooting.
- Ability to assess how changes to APIs, event contracts, schemas or configuration could affect other services.
- Ability to learn unfamiliar codebases and tools quickly, and adapt to established engineering protocols.
- Good technical judgment, including knowing when to investigate further, ask for review or raise a concern.
- A friendly, respectful approach to teamwork. Comfortable asking questions, sharing knowledge and giving or receiving feedback.
- Clear written communication and the ability to manage work independently in a remote team.
- Familiarity with Rust, Kafka, Redis or Valkey.
- Knows about messaging, telephony, WebSockets or other real-time systems.
- Have experience with multi-tenant SaaS applications.
Benefits & compensation
- Attractive salary package based on skills and relevant experience.
- A company-provided work device.
- Company coverage of paid tools and software needed for the role.
- Company-funded monthly AI subscriptions for work.
- Paid sick, casual and earned leave, plus festival holidays under the company’s leave policy.
- Festival bonus equal to 45% of basic salary.
- Yearly salary review.
